About this retreat

Soneva Jani occupies Medhufaru, one of the largest islands in the Maldives, set within a vast private lagoon in the remote Noonu Atoll — far enough north that the water traffic thins out almost entirely. Just over fifty villas are spread across the lagoon and the island itself, most of them standing alone on stilts over water the colour of glass.

The design details have become genuinely famous. Master bedroom roofs retract at the touch of a button so you can sleep under the stars; several villas have curling slides running from the upper deck directly into the lagoon; every water villa has its own pool and its own private stretch of water. The barefoot-luxury philosophy is taken literally — shoes are collected at arrival and returned at departure.

At the centre, The Gathering rises over three storeys holding the main restaurants, spa, dive centre and an observatory for the resort's astronomy programme. Dining is scattered and theatrical — overwater, treetop, in the wine cellar, on a sandbank — and sustainability runs deep, with the resort's own water bottling, waste-to-wealth facility and organic gardens.
