About this retreat
Ebony was the lodge that started Singita, built on the banks of the Sand River in the Sabi Sand Game Reserve — a private concession sharing an unfenced border with Kruger National Park and widely held to offer the most reliable leopard viewing anywhere on the continent. Twelve suites look out over the riverbed from beneath ancient ebony and jackalberry trees.
The style is colonial safari done with restraint: timber and thatch, leather campaign furniture, Persian rugs, vast windows and a private plunge pool and viewing deck for each suite. Nothing is fenced, so elephant and nyala move through camp at their own pace, and the soundtrack after dark belongs entirely to the bush.
Two game drives a day run with a ranger and tracker in open vehicles, with no fixed routes and off-road traversing permitted — the reason sightings here are as close and as unhurried as they are. Back at camp there is a spa, a wine cellar built around Singita's serious South African collection, a gym and a photographic studio with loan equipment.
